Book Review - The Bestseller She Wrote by Ravi Subramanian

The Bestseller She Wrote
Love. Betrayal. Redemption.
by Ravi Subramanian
                                      - a book review

From the back cover:
Paperback king Aditya Kapoor's life is straight out of a modern man's fantasy. His literary stardom is perfectly balanced by a loving wife and a spectacular career. With everything he touches turning to gold, Aditya is on a winning streak.

Shreya Kaushik is a student with a heart full of ambition. Young, beautiful and reckless, Shreya speaks about her mind and obsessively chases after what she wants. And what she wants is to be a bestselling author.
What happens when their worlds collide? Is it possible to love two people at the same time? Can real ambition come in the way of blind passion? Can trust once broken, be regained?

My Review:
Ravi Subramanian is a name which i often link with thrillers related to banking. So, when he jumped into the genre of romantic thriller, it can be said that i was mildly surprised! It is not that he should stick to one genre alone, but romance was a huge variation.

So, when i first opened the book, my expectations were sky high, partly because of his previous books and partly because of the new genre and the amount of publicity which this book got.

So, did it meet my sky high expectations or only up to tree top or stuck up with the flat land? Read on further to know more.
The characters mainly involved were Aditya Kapoor, the protagonist of the story. Shreya Kaushik, the other main character in the story. The other main supporting characters are Maya Kapoor, Aditya Kapoor's lovely wife, Sanjay, his best friend and Diana, one of Aditya and Sanjay's co-worker and Sunaina, Shreya's friend.

About the story.
When i have multiple books to read and cant decide on one particular one, i will take all the books and relax myself and read a chapter or two from all the books and i will be able to decide which one will be suitable for the current mood. What i tried to say was that, the first few chapters are important for a book and if u can captivate your readers, then you have the other part relatively easier.

This book starts with Aditya Kapoor's speech at Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, where he is an alumni himself. During his speech, he is interrupted rudely by a student namely, Shreya Kaushik. Their altercation makes both of them angry at the opposite party. Shreya, afraid of the wrath from her Director and in fear of loosing out the prestigious prize she has aimed for, plans to apologize to Aditya.

Aditya is introduced as a bestselling author and a banker.
When Shreya apologizes, Aditya wants to reply back dismissively, but the author tells you that 'something held him back'. That should make the reader ready for further irrational behaviour of the main character and shockingly seductive nature of Shreya Kaushik.

As the left side of your parted book slowly gathers height and momentum, you can expect to go through a bag of emotions. And when the right side of the book is fighting a lost cause, the reader will find miraculous discoveries and the trademark Ravi Subramanian.
In the middle of the book, the book seemed to have been written by an alter ego of the author. Was it a conscious attempt by the author or not, remains to be found out.

Also, it was mentioned that the book is supposedly going to be a motion picture soon. It intrigued me. Was it because of that the author has made the book a little filmy?
The story itself will make the readers open to the publishing world, which has been given a view like an underground organization.
You could have met ambitious people in life, but this shows you over ambitious people and what would happen if they entangle others in their treacherous claws? Will the person escape from the claws or silently accept defeat? These questions will be answered in the book.

The Final Verdict:
The book was overall a good one, but did not meet my expectations for such a great author. If he had been a newbie author, i would have said it was marvellous. But no, he is a well established author and as one, i have the right to expect more.

Not that this 'romantic thriller' was a bad read.
Like how a character in this book finishes a book in one night, i completed it in one night. It was captivating enough to make me forget sleep.
But I like a book, in which a story continues even beyond the last page, in the reader's mind.

A great book is not the one which doesn't let you sleep while reading it, it is one which doesn't let you sleep after having completed reading it.

I hope the author gives more into the thriller part, which we are hoping for.

My Rating: 7.5/10
